Francis Xavier Whelan
Francis Xavier Whelan was born on the 03 December, 1874, in Queens County (Now County Laois) Province of Leinster.
His parents were Paul Whelan and Bridget Golden.
Francis was educated at the National schools of Ireland.
While still in his native Ireland, around the age of fifteen (1889/90) Francis was confirmed.
Around the age of twenty-two Francis travelled to the USA and straight onto Canada where on the 22 September, 1896, he entered the Grand Seminary of Montreal, to study Philosophy.
Two years later he had completed his Philosophy studies, and on the 20 September, 1898, he started his Theology studies, also at the Grand Seminary, Montreal.
After completion of his Theology studies, Francis left the grand Seminary on the 27 June, 1901.
Francis started at St. Mary's Seminary, Baltimore College, in the Academic year of 1901-02.
It was June of 1902 that saw him depart for Colorado, where the next month on Thursday August 07, 1902, at St. Leo's Church in Denver, he was ordained by Bishop Nicholas Chrysostom Matz.
He was made Assistant Pastor at St. Leo's Church, Denver, Colorado.
He read his first mass on Sunday, 10 August, 1902.
Francis spent four years at St. Leo's before being made Pastor of St. Rose of Lima, Buena Vista, Colorado, in 1906.
Like his brother William, Francis became ill at quite an early stage of his life and in 1912 he was admitted to St. Joseph's Hospital in Philadelphia near his brother Patrick.
Just under nine months later on the 03 February, 1913, Francis passed away aged just 39 years old.
He was buried on the 04 February, 1913, at St. Holy Cross Cemetery in Philadelphia (I believe).
