Sarah Jane Wilson Nee Whelan
Sarah Jane Whelan was born on the 01 March, 1866, in Little Bray, Wicklow, Dublin.
Her parents were Paul Whelan and Bridget Golden.
Unlike her brothers I know next to nothing about the life of Sarah except some of the more major events.
I imagine that she also went to the National schools of Ireland until a certain age.
She also seemed to be the only sibling out of eight that did not emigrate to the USA.
On the 05 September, 1885, at St. Peters Cathedral in Belfast, aged 19, Sarah married a gentleman named William Wilson. Sarah and William are where I come in, they are my great great grandparents.
Sarah must have either liked living in Belfast a great deal or her husband William may not have liked the idea of upping sticks to move halfway across the globe.
Less than a year into the marriage, Sarah gave birth to their first child, by the name of Josephine Wilson, born 1886.
Josephine would later also emigrate to the USA and settle New York whilst become the relief nanny to Irvine Berlin's daughters. However she did move back to Ireland after marrying a gentleman named Lawrence Dalton, also from Ireland. She passed away on the 20 June, 1968, in Belfast.
Their next child, Patrick Wilson, was born on the 10 November, 1888, in Belfast. Patrick is the mystery relation in the family. All the kids show up on the 1901 and 1911 Ireland census all except Patrick. I have never been able to find him and from what the family tell me, he just upped sticks one day, joined the armed forces and was never seen again. He was believed to have gone to the USA and never returned.
It was just over two years later on the 01 April, 1891, in Belfast, that another son was born by the name of William Francis Wilson. All I know about William is that he left Ireland and moved to Ipswich in England, which is where he passed away in 1970.
The next child is where my line comes in. John Joseph Wilson was born on the 09 August, 1893, in Belfast. John was a bit of a lad and was prone to the odd tall story from what I can gather. He married quite late (by the standard of the early generation) and on the 20 April, 1924, at St Peters Cathedral in Belfast, he married Agnes Veronica Mckenna, who was twelve years John's junior at eighteen years old. At the time of the marriage John gave his occupation as Clerk and Agnes as Hemstitcher.
John and Agnes probably did not have a very loving marriage even though they did have 3 son's together, as one day Agnes met a gentleman by the name of Thomas Harvey and decided to run off with him taking all of John's kids with her.
John was left devastated, more by the loss of his son's than his unhappy wife. John would soldier on and started to work for the RAF in the Naffi. He travelled to London to work but had a heart attack whilst there and had to come back to Belfast. At the age of 69, on the 08 March, 1963, John passed away at Belfast City Hospital, and was buried in Milltown cemetery.
The next child to come along for William and Sarah was a little girl named Annie Elizabeth Wilson who was born on the 31 March, 1897, in Belfast. Again I know very little about Annie except that she passed away on the 03 May, 1982, in Belfast, and was buried in Milltown cemetery.
On the 27 November, 1900, in Belfast, another son was born by the name of Peter Paul Wilson. Peter went on to marry a lady named Sarah Jane Elliman and have many kids. Peter passed away on the 01 November, 1970, at Belfast City Hospital, and was buried at Milltown cemetery. I am still in touch with one of his son's and a few of his grand kids.
The last child born to William and Sarah was on the 03 March, 1903, in Belfast, by the name of Leonard (Known as Leo) Wilson. Leo married a lady named Elizabeth McCann in Belfast.
In all fairness Sarah was a very busy woman and had her hands full with all the children. Things went from bad to worse when on the 01 April, 1907, her husband William suddenly died. Things were not easy for Sarah but she was a strong lady and had the support of her family around her.
Sarah passed away on the 18 September, 1937, in Belfast. She was buried in Milltown cemetery.
Her parents were Paul Whelan and Bridget Golden.
