Mary Elizabeth Whelan
Mary Elizabeth Whelan was born on the 08 May, 1876, in Tyrone, Northern Ireland.
Her parents were Paul Whelan and Bridget Golden.
Mary went to the National schools of Ireland like all of her siblings before her.
Unlike her sister Sarah, Mary had no intention of staying in Ireland and once she was twenty years old she and her younger sister Josephine boarded a ship at Moville, in County Donegal, and set sail for Ellis Island in New York. They travelled aboard the 'Ethiopia' and in 2nd class with only one bag each. They arrived at Ellis Island on the 14 September, 1896.
Four years on from the journey to the states, Mary and Josephine have gone their separate ways and Mary is listed on the 1900 US census as a Servant to a family.
Life as a Servant to a strange family may not have agreed with her and as a result she moved to Ambler, Pennsylvania, to live with her brother Patrick at 592 Forest Ave, as it states on the 1910 US census.
I know only where Mary was after this time from census returns as she seems to have never married or had kids.
On the 1920 US census she was still living with her brother Patrick but they had now moved to 115 Hendricks Street, Ambler, Pennsylvania.
Her brother Patrick passed away in 1929 and it seems that Mary went back to live near her sister Josephine in New York.
On the 29 September, 1949, Mary passed away whilst living in the Bronx, New York.
