William Bernard Whelan
William was born on the 04 October, 1868, in Little Bray, Wicklow, Dublin, Ireland.
His father and mother were Paul Whelan and Bridget Golden.
He attended the National schools of Ireland before Emigrating to the USA around 1887. Upon arrival he headed for St. Louis College of New Westminster in British Columbia to start his Classical studies.
He entered the Novitiate of New Westminster as a Lay Brother on 31 October, 1887, and made his profession on the 21 January 1889.
William entered the Novitiate also in New Westminster on the 31 October, 1889 and made his profession on April 24, 1890.
He made his final vows at St. Joseph's Seminary in Ottawa on the 07 May, 1891.
After completing his vows William went to St. Louis College, New Westminster to complete his studies. After spending Six years at the College he was Ordained at St. Louis College on September 26, 1897, by Bishop Paul Durieu, OMI, who also ordained his brother John.
After his Ordination, William stayed at the College of St. Louis and taught there from 1897-1900 before being made Assistant to Father Fallon at St. Joseph's Church.
Father Michael Francis Fallon would later become Bishop Michael Francis Fallon of London, Ontario, Canada.
While William was Assistant to Father Fallon, he was also still a Professor at the University of Ottawa as well as the manager of the 'University Review'. During this time William was living at the University.
William would have gone on to have an excellent career had he not been cut down in the bloom of his manhood by the dreaded disease 'Consumption'.
William relinquished his hold on life, which was said to be a welcome from the pain, on the 08 October, 1901.
The solemn high mass was chanted by his brother, Father John Whelan OMI.
William was buried at the cemetery of St. Joseph's Seminary before being reburied at the cemetery of Notre-Dame, Hull, near Ottawa, on September 19, 1977.
