Patrick M Whelan
Patrick M Whelan was born on 17 March 1864/5 (subject to investigation as clashes with brother John) in Cavan, Province of Ulster.
His father and mother were Paul Whelan and Bridget Golden.
Like his brother John, Patrick attended the National Schools of Ireland before taking his temporary vows with the Irish Christian Brothers. He was with the Christian Brothers from 1878 until 1889.
As soon as Patrick left the Brothers he left Ireland and like his brother John, headed off to the USA.
In 1890 Patrick enrolled at St. Charles Seminary, Overbrook, Wynnewood, Pennsylvania. He spent Six years studying there before, on the 30 May, 1896, he was ordained in the Cathedral of SS, Peter and Paul, Philadelphia, by Archbishop Patrick John Ryan.
A week later on June 06, he was appointed Assistant Rector of the Church of St. Gabriel, Philadelphia.
He then became Assistant Rector of Holy Cross Church, Mount Airy, Philadelphia.
It wasn't long before he was moved again, and on October 14, 1904, he was transferred to the Philadelphia Protectory where he served as Chaplain for three years.
Patrick's next appointment in August 1907, would be his last stop as he would go on to serve as Pastor of St. Anthony's of Padua, Ambler, Philadelphia, for the next Twenty-Two years.
It was St. Anthony's that in the fall of 1923, Patrick founded the parish school of St. Anthony - St. Joseph Elementary school, which is still in existence to this very day.
Patrick became very ill in June of 1929, and his last entry in the baptismal register is dated 02 June, 1929, little more than a month before his death.
Patrick died at St. Joseph's hospital in Philadelphia on the 04 July, 1929.
